The National Weather Service recommends staying indoors and stocking up on essential items.

Winter Storm Warning issued for West Virginia ahead of Sunday snow

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for southeastern West Virginia, including Mercer, Greenbrier, and Monroe counties. The forecast calls for 5 to eight inches of snow and ice in some areas. If you’re planning on traveling, be sure to stock up on supplies and plan ahead. It is best to make a checklist of what you need to have in your car in case of emergencies.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for West Virginia for this weekend. The forecast predicts heavy mixed precipitation, with accumulations of six to ten inches of snow and ice. The heaviest snow is expected in Preston and Cabell counties. The heaviest snow is expected to fall in Randolph, Tucker, and Pocahontas counties. In addition to the hazardous road conditions, power outages are possible.

In addition to the southern part of the state, a fast-moving storm system will spread snow northward through the mountains of southwest Virginia and northern West Virginia. The storm will bring heavy snow Sunday night and into Monday morning. The storm system may cause slick conditions and icy roads. To be safe, residents are encouraged to follow updates and plan ahead. The state police also warns residents to keep emergency supplies in their vehicles and use their headlights while driving. As a reminder, drivers should slow down and increase the distance between themselves and the vehicles ahead.

In addition to the counties mentioned above, areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia are also under a Winter Storm Warning. The National Weather Service says that between noon Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday, the state should expect 4 to 6 inches of snow. In addition, parts of Tennessee and Kentucky may see up to eight inches of snow. While the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Wind and Ice Warning, the state should be prepared for this potentially threatening weather.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has begun treating roads ahead of the winter storm. They are working to avoid the potential for a repeat of the Interstate 95 meltdown, which caused thousands of travelers to become stranded. In addition to deicing materials, residents should prepare for the storm by stocking up on ice-resistant salt and other ice-reducing supplies. In addition to preparing for the snow, they should also prepare for their homes and cars.
