Gaza (Washington Insider Magazine) – An Israeli airstrike on a school in Deir-al Balah, central Gaza, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and injuries to over 100 others, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. The Israeli military stated that the strike targeted a Hamas command and control center located within the school compound.

The aftermath of the airstrike saw a majority of victims, including women and children, arriving at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, as reported by Dr. Khalil Al-Daqran, a hospital spokesperson. The Palestinian Civil Defense indicated that more than 4,000 displaced individuals had been sheltering at the school.

After the attack, the Israeli military issued new evacuation orders for the southern town of Khan Younis, where a previous attack had killed a large number of Palestinians. Residents were told to flee the city after the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) declared plans to increase operations in the area.

Ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis

The conflict in the Gaza Strip has been going on for months, with Israel aiming to crush Hamas. According to Israeli sources, over 100 fighters have been killed in the most recent fighting. According to the United Nations, almost 150,000 people evacuated Khan Younis alone on Monday, further worsening the scarce food, water, and shelter resources.

The IOF signaled further military action, urging residents of southern Khan Younis to evacuate to Al-Mawasi, which was designated as a humanitarian area. However, this area has faced multiple Israeli assaults, including a July 14 strike that claimed the lives of 90 people and injured 300 more.

According to CNN, an eyewitness in Khan Younis described the panic and chaos as residents fled following the evacuation order, with explosions and flares lighting up the sky. The ongoing military offensive, which began on October 7 following a Hamas attack on southern Israel, has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties and displacement.

Humanitarian Concerns and Aid Challenges

The Ministry of Health in Gaza reports that Israeli military actions have killed 39,090 Palestinians and injured 90,147 others since the conflict began. Nearly 2 million people have been displaced in Gaza, almost the entire population, according to UN figures. Aid agencies warn that ongoing evacuations are complicating the delivery of essential supplies.

Despite the intense fighting, there are signs of potential progress towards a ceasefire and hostage negotiations. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated plans to send a negotiation team to Rome. Vice President Kamala Harris urged Netanyahu to finalize an agreement, emphasizing the need for peace.
