Washington DC (Washington Insider Magazine) —  Richard Lynn Scott is an American attorney, businessman, and politician. He is serving as the junior United States senator for Florida since 2019. He is also a member of the Republican Party and was the 45th governor of Florida from 2011 to 2019.

Biography 

Rick Scott’s full name is Richard Lynn Myers. He was born in Bloomington, Illinois, on December 1, 1952. Scott is 70 years old. He never met his biological father, Gordon William Myers because he was an abusive alcoholic. Scott’s parents got divorced during his infancy.

In 1954, his mother got married to Orba George Scott Jr. who was a truck driver. Orba adopted Rick, and he took his stepfather’s surname. Scott became known as Richard Lynn Scott and was raised in North Kansas City, Missouri. He was the second child out of the five children of the couple, His family was lower-middle-class and they struggled financially.

Scott earned his graduation degree from North Kansas City High School in 1970. He also attended community college and was enlisted in the United States Navy in 1970. He served in the American navy for 29 months.

Scott graduated from the University of Missouri–Kansas City and earned a bachelor’s degree of Science in business administration. Rick also had a juris doctor degree which he got by working at Southern Methodist University. He is also a licensed lawyer by the Texas Bar and practiced law since November 6, 1978.

Political Career

On April 9, 2010, Scott announced that he will be taking part in the 2010 Republican Party nomination for governor of Florida. He ran against the Democratic nominee Alex Sink. Susie Wiles, served as Scott’s campaign manager. It was reported that Scott’s campaign spent around $4.7 million on television and radio ads. In October 2011, Scott announced that he will be running for reelection in 2014. His political funding committee, raised $28 million to promote his campaign in May 2014.

Scott spend almost $13 million on television advertisements and attacked the governor Charlie Crist, who was the likely Democratic nominee. The ads tightened the race, because of the decline in Crist’s favorability ratings, while at the same time, Scott’s favorability ratings did not increase.

During Hurricane Irma, Scott was leading Florida and took it out of the largest mass evacuation in U.S. history. He played an important role in making Florida a better place to live. During his tenure Unemployment, taxpayer debt, and crime declined significantly.

 He also urged to bring a change to Florida’s 1985 growth management laws, to reduce the water management districts, at oversight at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. He also showed strong support for the increased funding for Everglades restoration.

In 2013, Scott signed the Timely Justice Act (HB 7101) [80] that aimed to overhaul the processes for capital punishment in Florida. The judge deterred the aggravating facts that were used to consider a death sentence with only the recommendation from the jury.

Scott made a strong Plan to Rescue America. On February 22, 2022, Scott introduced his controversial 11-Point Plan that aimed to Rescue America. This plan was introduced to lower the effect of Democratic criticism. He prepared a plan that forced all Americans to pay at least some income tax. 

The proposal did not mention any specific legislation. This plan also focused on eliminating the rubbish talk on social media platforms regarding social issues. It also focused to ensure that transgender women are allowed to participate in women’s sports. He also demanded to ban the supposed teaching of critical race theory and wished to expand religious freedom.

Personal life

Scott got married at the age of 19. He got married to his high school sweetheart, Frances Annette Holland who was 20 years old at that time. The couple has two daughters and six grandsons. The family lives in Naples, Florida, and are the founding members of Naples Community Church. Scott tested positive for COVID-19 and it was revealed that he was experiencing mild symptoms. He got cured soon and got back on the field.

Scott has an estimated net worth of US$219 million in 2010. He earned a salary of $84 million in 2012 and $133 million in 2013. In 2015 it was reported that Scott’s net worth had grown to $147 million. His net worth reached a peak of $232 million on December 31, 2017. According to an insider report Scott estimated net worth has earned a $200 million of net worth and this makes him the wealthiest member of Congress.
