Ukraine (Washington Insider Magazine) – The Vatican has announced its collaboration with Ukraine to launch a Vatican peace mission to aid in the termination of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian War, reported Pope Francis during a news conference on his flight returning to Rome from Hungary.
As a result of the tensional conflict between the two nations that has been boiling since 2014, numerous fatalities and household evictions have been reported in Ukraine. This is an effect of the dispute intensifying following the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022—preempting the Vatican peace mission.
To bring about peace in Ukraine, the Vatican is actively doing its part by launching the Vatican peace mission, attempting to change the narrative between the two warring countries.
Francis desires communication between the two states, an end to the harmful hostility, and the exchange of captives. This comes as a surprise to some who state that the Kremlin was not even aware of the peace mission, despite claims from Pope Francis.
The Vatican’s stated mission is to uphold jeopardized human rights and believes that the conflict can be resolved through the use of proper dialogue.
How Have Vatican Peace Goals Impacted Surrounding Regions?
The Pope has also spoken of fostering a harmonious peace for the region and urges other international leaders, such as Viktor Orban, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Russian Orthodox Church representative Metropolitan Hilarion, and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
During the meeting with Shmyhal, he requested that the Pope assist in returning the children to their homes, as nearly 19,500 children have been abducted to Russia or Russian-occupied territories since the conflict intensified.
Francis responded by saying that he was willing to aid in the repatriation of the children because it is the right thing to do. He claims that it is his duty to try everything that is humanly possible.
What Else Did Pope Francis Speak About Besides Vatican Peace At The Conference?
During the conference, Francis spoke about getting over a recent case of what he identified as bronchitis on March 29th. He was taken to the hospital that day and was released on April 1, having been diagnosed with pneumonia in the lung’s lower section.
Is The Vatican Peace Mission Worth It?
Even with the obstacles both Ukraine and the Pope himself are facing, the Vatican is devoted to restoring peace in the region.
The Pope’s statements serve as a public reminder of the vital role that communication plays in resolving conflicts as well as that of religious leaders bringing healing to nations in suffering.
