NY Migrant Crisis: National Guard Involved

NY Migrant Crisis: National Guard Involved, Transatlantic Today

(Washington Insider Magazine)-The National Guards in NY are being ordered to deploy at the city’s homeless shelters to manage the large number of NY migrants from Latin America according to the Daily News. It’s known as the NY Migrant Crisis, and is expected to continue through the end of 2022.

It’s unclear how many National Guards in NY will be deployed, but troops are already said to be located at about eight Homeless Shelter locations.

The troops have been “providing core operations support,” according to the DHS spokeswoman.

The governor of the state, Gov. Hochul, ordered 147 National Guards to help Mayor Adams’s administration manage its Randall Island tent camp for illegal migrants, a site that can house up to 1000 people which is operated by the city’s Emergency Management Department, though it’s unclear if troops will be sent to that location.

The camp, which had been empty due to controversy, was originally built to house single male adults and was opened last Wednesday with migrants seen entering the site.

Over 16,000 migrants in NY from South and Central America were in the city, most of them in DHS NY Migrant Shelters, according to the Mayor’s Office.

Escaping poverty and violence from their homelands, these NY migrants have increased the number of sheltered people to 63,666 as of Tuesday night, reported by DHS.

Despite Randall’s camp still largely empty, it still cost the city over $650,000 to maintain, despite complaints the mayor rejected criticism for building the tent.

The facility was opened just as the migrant crisis in NY began to stabilize and decrease.

Fewer busloads of NY migrants are arriving into the city every day compared to about 10 buses every day for a month, said Adams.

The reduction of the migrant crisis in NY is a result of the border policy implemented by the Biden Administration to reject Venezuelan migrants back to Mexico unless they have financial sponsors already living in the U.S.

This same policy was first implemented by former President Donald J. Trump to stem the flow of illegal migration across the border and is now used by the government to solve the migrant crisis in NY.
