National declaration on climate change halted

National declaration on climate change halted, Transatlantic Today

(Washington Insider Magazine)-President Joe Biden has not yet decided whether he plans to declare a national declaration of climate change in the next few weeks. Although, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, that doesn’t mean that significant action isn’t being taken.

The press gathered with significant vigor as talks of a potential declaration on climate change grow more urgent. The dire situation prompted an endless stream of questions regarding President Biden’s current strategy, and whether or not he plans to announce a national emergency–which would extend his presidential powers for further action. Press Secretary Jean-Pierre was not able to confirm exact details but did tell reporters not to anticipate an official national declaration on climate change this week.

While unsure of the President’s direct plan of action, Jean-Pierre was able to confirm if a national emergency is declared, a large number of funds would be released to address the threat. However, she did not mention any further details.

In addition to talks about climate, many government officials have gathered to discuss a public health declaration on abortion access after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

Press Secretary Jean-Pierre wanted to clearly establish the difference between the two issues and was quoted stating that a declaration of a public health emergency is a very different thing than a climate emergency declaration. Either option would unlock a significant amount of funding and redirect authorities’ priorities to address both open items with new vigor.

The President has promised to take executive action on climate change as Joe Manchin publicly opposes any legislation that requires an economic spending package.

Despite the disagreement, the President has continued to assure the public of his intentions to resolve climate change issues while rebuilding the economy. He was quote stating that he will be taking steps to create jobs and bolster domestic manufacturing while improving energy security and the American economy.

Manchin’s continual objection presents an issue for the Democrats because his vote is required to forward any legislation. Many democratic lawmakers have decided to focus their attention elsewhere instead of risking Manchin changing his stance on the climate change issue.

The Supreme Court could challenge any executive action on the climate crisis, which could have lasting effects on future environmental regulations.
