Migrant (Washington Insider Magazine)-The White House has pressured the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency to tighten homeland security this week after documenting that several thousand illegal migrants enter the United States monthly. This is an attempt to satiate the ongoing migrant crisis, which has worsened over the course of the Biden Administration’s tenure.
With border entry doubling and minimal enforcement occurring, Republicans across the aisles are upset over loose border control and the subsequent rise in crime rates.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is feeling pressure from the White House administration amid the present border crisis to tighten the border between Mexico and the United States. Recently released information shows that just 59,000 deportations occurred during 2021’s fiscal year. This is a stark contrast to the higher rates of other years.
However, this request is contradictory to the current Administration’s policies. New policies implemented by the Biden Administration protect all non-citizen entry from any enforced action.
Presently, each illegal entry is reviewed on a “case-by-case” basis, determining the risk of poverty and endangerment.
President Joe Biden has taken steps to implement deportation relief and reverse former President Trump’s immigration restriction. Since 2021, President Biden has taken action to reduce the number of non-citizen visas and increased the number of green cards.
The administration has also acted on eliminating the restrictions originally placed on green card applicants and public health assistance, which concerns Republicans about the increased financial burden on Americans.
The proposed legislative initiative would also modernize the family-based immigration system, reexamine employment visa rules and increase lawful permanent residence visas.
Since the immigration docket was established during the pandemic, 60,000 migrants have been added to the list, but only 150 deportations have occurred. Regardless of the pressure from White House officials, the Department of Homeland Security has not increased deportation but rather has focused its attention on outlining options and enforcing immigration laws safely and humanely.
However, less than half of noncitizen deportations and arrests have occurred compared to the previous year, intensifying the presently standing border crisis.
The Biden administration proposes an interior change of immigration enforcement by hoping to implement a refined legal asylum pathway, allowing citizenship through a new legislative eight-year process.
The asylum pathway would allow new immigrants into the United States while giving non-citizens already in the country a legal way to stay. Although Republicans filed a lawsuit against the newly narrowed guidelines that presently protect migrants from ICE-enforced action, details of the policy change have been blocked by court order.
