Israeli Airstrike in Syria Claims Over 40 Lives, NGO Confirms, Transatlantic Today

BEIRUT (Washington Insider Magazine)— Israel intensified its offensive against the Lebanese Hezbollah troops with a significant bombing in Syria, resulting in the highest casualty toll in three years. The strike, targeting Iranian-associated forces, led to approximately 40 deaths, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

In the past decade, Israeli military operations have frequently targeted fighters who are aligned with Tehran, with a particular focus on Hezbollah. These military actions have taken advantage of the ongoing Syrian civil war, with tacit approval from Russia, to gain control of the airspace. Recently, a strike was carried out near Aleppo airport, a transportation hub for weapons, which continues this trend. The situation in Syria remains complex and concerning, and it is important to approach it professionally and respectfully.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, known for its reliable Syrian sources, reported that the attack killed at least 42 Syrian soldiers and Hezbollah fighters. The strike targeted Hezbollah’s missile depots, along with Hamas and Iranian forces, allies of the Syrian regime.

This incident represents the deadliest Israeli attack on the Syrian army since the Gaza conflict escalation initiated by Hamas on October 7.

In response to escalating tensions, Israel has increased airstrikes in Syria, specifically targeting Hezbollah and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. Recent Israeli airstrikes have targeted Lebanon as well.\

According to Lanacion, Iran and its allies have a significant presence in Syria, particularly in Aleppo and Damascus. Israel’s airstrikes aim to disrupt arms shipments to Iran’s regional allies, growing more intense since October 7.

Hezbollah has launched regular attacks on northern Israel from southern Lebanon, met with Israeli retaliation striking deeper into Lebanese territory.

Israeli military sources confirmed the elimination of a Hezbollah missile unit leader, Ali Abdel Hassan Naim, in southern Lebanon.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah remain high, with daily cross-attacks that could escalate into a full-scale war.

The Attack

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 36 Syrian soldiers and six Hezbollah fighters killed in the attack, along with numerous wounded. Initial reports only mentioned Syrian army casualties.

According to security sources cited by Reuters, 33 Syrians and five Hezbollah fighters died in the attacks. One of the slain Hezbollah fighters was a local commander whose brother had died in a previous Israeli attack.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense stated that Israeli airstrikes targeted several areas in southeast Aleppo province, resulting in civilian and military casualties.

Syria alleged that the airstrikes coincided with drone attacks from Idlib and western rural Aleppo, attributed to “terrorist organizations” by the ministry.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the attack.

Hezbollah maintains a presence in Syria, supporting President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and securing supply lines with Iran. Tehran claims its involvement in Syria is limited to military advisory roles.

An attack on a residential property outside Damascus claimed at least two lives, attributed to Israel by the Sana press agency. This followed Israeli bombings on March 19 targeting Hezbollah weapons depots near the Syrian capital.
