Families of children injured in Uvalde shooting files $100M lawsuit

Robb Elementary School

UVALDE, Texas (Washington Insider Magazine) –  Families of 4 children hurt in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, are suing the alleged shooter’s estate, demanding information about how he obtained access to the campus.

On Monday, Thomas J. Henry, an attorney for the families, filed a lawsuit in a Texas district court on their behalf.

Salvador Ramos, 18, is accused of killing 19 students and 2 teachers at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School on May 24. The 17 children injured in the incident are among the victims of the lawsuit.

Henry and his colleagues are heading an investigation into the shooting, including how the alleged gunman obtained an AR-15 and dozens of rounds of ammunition, as well as how he gained access to the school.

According to the suit, the plaintiffs sustained serious injuries to their backs, faces, legs, and other areas of their bodies, necessitating many surgeries as well as emotional damage from witnessing their teachers and classmates die. The parents are suing for $100 million in compensation.

Ramos’ history will also be investigated by Henry’s firm to discover whether he had a violent past.

The lawsuit might be the first of several resulting from the massacre that shook a Texas community and reignited the debate over gun regulation in the United States.

According to a press statement, Alfred Garza, the parent of Amerie Jo Garza, one of the kids killed in the Uvalde massacre, hired Connecticut attorneys who were successful in their lawsuit against the manufacturer of the weapon used during the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School killing.

Garza’s lawyers filed a petition with Daniel Defense, the maker of the weapon used in the Robb Elementary School shooting, last week, demanding documents.

A Robb Elementary School teacher, who was wrongly accused by the Texas Department of Public Safety of having left a school door unlocked, allowing the shooter to infiltrate the school, filed an application for evidence on Daniel Defense through her attorney, according to ABC News

In an address from the White House on June 2, President Joe Biden called on Congress to abolish the privilege that protects gun manufacturers from being held accountable.
