Egypt Responds to Accusations by Israel

Egypt (Washington Insider Magazine)— Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shukri, has denounced Israel’s claims on Tuesday, stating that they are “distorting the truth” regarding the closure of the Rafah crossing, linking Gaza to Sinai, and attributing blame for the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian enclave to Cairo.

Shukri’s Statement

Shukri issued a statement rejecting Israel’s accusations, asserting that Israel bears full responsibility for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to its offensive actions in the enclave and its recent closure of the Rafah crossing, a crucial entry point for life-saving aid to Palestinians.

Egypt’s Position

According to Elnuevodiario, Egypt has always stated that the Rafah crossing has been open from its side throughout the crisis, posing challenges to humanitarian aid delivery to Israel. Shukri noted that Israeli control of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, as well as surrounding military actions, pose substantial threats to humanitarian personnel and assistance delivery.

Impact on Humanitarian Efforts

Shukri highlighted that Israeli attacks on Rafah have hindered aid efforts, leading to the impossibility of bringing assistance through the crossing. The UNRWA estimates that approximately 450,000 people have fled Rafah since Israel issued evacuation orders, initially targeting the eastern neighborhoods of the town.
