(Washington Insider Magazine) -The Biden Administration will host the 2023 Democracy Summit with Costa Rica, the Netherlands, Zambia, and South Korea on March 29th and 30th. This follows the first Democracy Summit hosted by the White House in December 2021, which procured over 700 commitments to safeguard democracy.
In December 2021, the Summit for Democracy focused on the challenges and opportunities facing individual countries and their influence nationwide. The summit gave space for world leaders to share commitments for reform, as well as initiatives to protect democracy and human rights. Government officials from each country and private sector officials attended the summit in 2021 and are hoped to take part in the upcoming 2023 Democracy Summit.
Press Secretary Jean-Pierre announced the second Democracy Summit scheduled for March of 2023 on Tuesday. The focus of the Summit will follow up on the commitments and reforms discussed in 2021, as well as focus on efforts to strengthen the democratic nation’s united front against authoritarianism and fighting corruption.
The Democracy Summit of 2023 might have its own challenges despite commitments made during the upcoming summit. Unlike the first Democracy Summit in 2021, next year the Republicans will have control of the House of Representatives. As a result, the Republican party may delay or limit diplomatic decisions made by the Biden Administration.
Being that President Joe Biden embraced protecting democracy during his 2016 presidential campaign and has themed his time in the White House as the same, it comes as no surprise that the ongoing focus of both the White House Summits is protecting Democracy.
It is certain past commitments will be displayed as it reveals the inadequacy of follow-through from the US with the Ukraine crisis. In addition, the US failure to support additional commitments has cast doubt on the United States’ maintaining global leadership.
On a number of occasions, President Biden has pledged his reverence to the gift of democracy within the United States, despite fraudulent claims that still circle around the 2020 presidential election and the Republican win of the House. It is hoped the President will uphold his leverage despite the countering offensives.
