Del Potro Opts Out: Uncertain Tennis Comeback

Del Potro Opts Out: Uncertain Tennis Comeback, Transatlantic Today

Argentine (Washington Insider Magazine) – The Argentine Juan Martín Del Potro commented this Wednesday that he will not be able to play the upcoming US Open 2023, the last Grand Slam of the year in which the tennis player had prepared to return to the courts.

Despite having announced his retirement in 2022, Del Potro had publicly stated that he wanted to return to tennis and that he would do so at the US Open but in his words he is still not physically at his best.

“I tried by all means to reach term, but my body does not accompany me 100% to feel comfortable and happy to share, once again with you, a unique moment,” he said through an emotional publication on social networks. .

He later said he wanted to continue applying tools that allow him not to feel more pain and to be able to live well again.

“I will continue looking for the best alternatives to recover my quality of life,” he added in the text.

In February 2022, Del Potro, afflicted with physical problems, decided to announce that he was hanging up his racket at the Buenos Aires Open. The pain in his right knee had become unbearable and although he did not rule out a future return, it was “more of a farewell than a miraculous return”, as he said at the time.

In 2019, while he was playing the Queen’s tournament, he suffered from a fracture in his right kneecap and from that moment on he had four operations to try to return to the slopes.

However, in recent times he hinted that he would return and that the dream he wanted to fulfill was to play the United States Open, the only Grand Slam that appears in his record, after winning it in 2009.

That final, which lasted 4 hours and 6 minutes, concluded with the Argentine’s victory over the Swiss Roger Federer, whom he only won seven of the 25 times they met, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5 ), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) and 6-2.

We will have to wait to find out if Del Potro will make the decision to retry his comeback, either at the 2024 US Open or at any other Grand Slam, or if, on the contrary, he will abandon the desire to once again play a professional competition within the tennis.
