Egypt Threatens to Withdraw from Gaza Mediation Amid Allegations

Egypt (Washington Insider Magazine)—  Egypt has issued a stern warning this Wednesday, threatening to withdraw entirely from its mediation role in the Gaza conflict. This decision comes in response to what Cairo describes as “continued attempts” to undermine its efforts, following the publication of a CNN report that Egypt claims contains “false accusations.”

Egyptian Government’s Response

Diaa Rashwan, head of the State Information Service and spokesperson for the Egyptian government, stated, “The continued attempts to question and insult the Egyptian mediation efforts and role, with accusations that contradict reality, will only lead to further complications in Gaza and the entire region.” Rashwan emphasized that these actions could force Egypt to withdraw from its mediation activities, in which it serves as a key interlocutor between Israel and Hamas, alongside Qatar.

Reaction to CNN Report

Egypt’s reaction was prompted by a CNN report alleging that Egyptian Intelligence altered the terms of the latest ceasefire proposal for Gaza, which Israel had previously approved. According to the report, this modification angered both Qatar and the United States. The network cited three anonymous sources who claimed that this unilateral change by Cairo hindered the possibility of ending the fighting temporarily and releasing hostages and prisoners on both sides.

Accusations Against Mediation Efforts

Rashwan accused certain parties of consistently trying to discredit the mediators, hinting at Israel’s role in spreading “lies” to delay decisions regarding a ceasefire. He warned that such actions not only jeopardize the mediation process but also exacerbate the situation in Gaza.

Egypt’s Stance on the Gaza Conflict

According to Canal26, Egypt, the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, has continuously voiced strong opposition to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The administration has also expressed worry about military operations in Rafah, a city that has experienced substantial displacement, with over 1.4 million people affected.

By threatening to withdraw from its mediation role, Egypt highlights the fragile nature of the current efforts to achieve peace in the Gaza Strip. The allegations and subsequent reactions underscore the complexities and challenges faced by mediators in the region.
