Washington DC (Washington Insider Magazine) —Todd Christopher Young is a member of the Republican Party. He has been serving as the senior United States senator for Indiana since 2017. Before that, he was the U.S. representative for Indiana’s 9th Congressional District. He also won the election to the United States Senate on November 8th, 2016, succeeding Dan Coats, and is an important part of American politics. Todd was reelected in 2022 – preceding this he served as the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee from 2019 to 2021.

Biography

Young was born on August 24, 1972, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Todd is 50 years old. He was born to parents Nancy R. (née Pierce) and Bruce H. He is the second of three children. His family lived in Marion County, Indiana, for several years before moving to Hamilton County, Indiana. Todd attended public schools and won the state soccer championship. Young graduated from Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, in 1990. He later went to Indiana University Robert to complete his further education.

Military Career

After completing high school, Young joined the United States Navy, reporting to Newport, Rhode Island. He was later appointed by the Secretary of the Navy to attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. While there, his fellow students elected him a class officer and he won a varsity letter for the Navy’s Division I soccer team.

Young graduated in 1995 with a B.S. in political science and was commissioned into the Marine Corps afterward. He completed six months of training at Quantico’s Basic School and then did his Naval Intelligence Officer Basic Course in Dam Neck, Virginia. Todd was appointed to lead the intelligence department of VMU-2. He worked in an unmanned aerial vehicle squadron stationed in Cherry Point, North Carolina. Lastly while serving in Chicago, he got an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 2000.

Early Political Career

In 2001, Young transferred to D.C., taking up a limited stint at The Heritage Foundation – a conservative think tank. Subsequently, he acted as an aide to U.S. Senator Richard Lugar. In 2003, he backed Mitch Daniels in his campaign for the Governorship of Indiana and was declared a delegate to the state’s Republican convention. From 2007-2010 he worked as an Assistant Deputy Prosecutor for Orange County, Indiana. He went on to form a fiscal responsibility advocacy group named the National Organization for People vs. Irresponsible Government Spending in 2007.

U.S. House of Representatives

In the 112th Congress, Young voted with the Republican Party 95% of the time. He served as the representative for Indiana. For LGBT issues, the Human Rights Campaign rated his record 30%, which is a mixed score. He took the lead in sponsoring REINS Act in July 2012 which was a measure that passed the House in 201. 

Young worked on the House Budget Committee and House Armed Services Committee where he focused on seapower, electronic warfare, and the military grand strategy of the US. He had one German Marshall Fund’s Congressional Fellow employed as Military Legislative Aide. In 2010, he was not sure of what caused global warming. Whether it be sunspots or normal cycles of nature Todd was curious to find the answer to it. However, he acknowledged that “the science is not settled.” He showed his stance against taxes associated with climate change by signing Americans for Prosperity’s pledge that year. Todd voted affirmatively to Energy Tax Prevention Act in 2011. In 2014, he commented that there is no scientific consensus on climate change being “not necessarily the case.”

Political Positions

Todd Young is a member of the Republican Main Street Partnership. His seat was situated in the center to center-right of the Republican Party. Todd has earned a lifetime conservative grade of 83% from the American Conservative Union and a 0% rating from the progressive Americans for Democratic Action. In April 2020, Young voted in support of President Trump’s position on legislation about 84% of the time. The nonpartisan National Journal revealed his 2013 voting analysis to be 69% conservative and 31% liberal.

Abortion Laws

Young is a staunch opponent of abortion, having been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). On the other side, he has a 0% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood, organizations advocating for abortion rights. Todd’s stance on abortion extends beyond this. He believes that employers with religious objections should not be mandated to offer their female employees birth control.

This was further accentuated when Young co-sponsored legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and voted to bar federal funding from it. He further believes that Roe v. Wade was incorrectly decided and celebrated its overturning in 2022. Todd called it “a monumental day for the protection of life in America” and affirmed that the Supreme Court had justifiably “righted a historic wrong”.

Gun Laws

In 2016, the National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed Young for Senate and gave him an “A+” rating. The Gun Owners of America, a gun rights organization, gave Young a 50% rating in 2018. The NRA gave him a 100% rating. In June 2022, Young voted in favor of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.

Immigration Laws

Young has expressed opposition to the DREAM Act. He supported the pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the United States which were estimated at nearly 12 million. Expounding further on his standpoint, Young has voiced his desire for an immigration system that is based on merit and job qualifications. In 2018, he partnered with Senator Ted Cruz in introducing a bill aiming to end family separation. This bill was issued as a result of President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy.

Personal Life

In 2005, Todd Young got married to Jennifer Tucker. His wife is the niece of former vice-president Dan Quayle. The couple has four children together named: Tucker Young, Ava Young, Abigail Young, and Annalise Young. He is a family man and is often seen spending time with his family.
