Biography 

Coons was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. He is the son of Sarah Louise “Sally” (née Ives) and Kenelm Winslow “Ken” Coons. Coons grew up in Hockessin, Delaware, and went to the public Yorklyn Elementary School. He later went to H.B. DuPont Middle School. His parents were struggling financially and divorced in the mid-1970s. Coons and his two brothers’ mother for a few years until his mother married Robert W. Gore.

Coons graduated from the private Tower Hill School and later went to Amherst College in 1985. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry and political science from there. While bringing in college, he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity and was also a U.S. Senate intern. During his junior year of college, Coons studied abroad and was enrolled at the University of Nairobi in Kenya through St. Lawrence University’s Kenya Semester Program.

Professional Career

After college, Coons worked at the Washington, D.C., for the Investor Responsibility Research Center. He wrote a book on South Africa and took part in the U.S. divestment movement. Coons worked as a volunteer for the South African Council and was a relief worker in Kenya. He returned to the USA and worked for the National Coalition for the Homeless in New York.

Coons worked as a clerk for Judge Jane Richards Roth on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Coons began his eight-year career as the in-house counsel for W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc., Newark which is a Delaware-based maker of Gore-Tex fabrics.

Chris also worked for several nonprofits, and organizations including Coalition for the Homeless, the education-oriented “I Have a Dream” Foundation, and the South African Council of Churches. Coons first became involved in politics when he worked on the behalf of Republican politicians.

He also worked on Bill Roth’s U.S. Senate campaign in 1982 and switched from being a Republican to a Democrat. Chris Coons was elected to the office as the president of the New Castle County Council. He was also the endorsed candidate of the New Castle County Democratic Party in 2008. In his six years of a county executive, Coons worked for the surplus in the fiscal year 2010.

In 2020 Coons defeated the technology executive Jessica Scarane. He faced the Republican nominee Lauren Witzke, for a ten-year immigration moratorium. Coons and Witzke also took part in the digital debate hosted by the Jewish Federation of Delaware.

In November 2020, he was named a candidate for Secretary of State in the Biden Administration. During United States Capitol, Coons evacuated the Senate chambers and partnered up with other senators and staff.

He shared: “some scary and chaotic moments” during the attack. When the Senate reconvened to certify the Electoral College vote count, Coons called for Trump’s removal, saying he “poses a real and present threat to the future of our democracy”. Coons also supported the invocation of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment and led the United States Constitution after the event took place. He participated in the Good Morning America show and talked about the amendments on the same day. He also called for Republicans Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, who challenged the election results, and reassigned him with the Senate.

Personal life

Coons got married to the former Annie Lingenfelter. The couple has three children together. They have twins Mike and Jack, and a daughter Maggie. The family is currently living in Wilmington, Delaware. Coons is Presbyterian and his wife is Catholic. They are often seen attending St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church in the city. Coons describes himself as:

“someone who is, privately, fairly religious,” though he has never thought “that needs to be a big part of [campaigning].”

In 1999, Coons was awarded the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award for his work at the “I Have a Dream” Foundation. He also worked at the Governor’s Mentoring Council and the United Way of Delaware for many years.
