(Washington Insider Magazine) – The Italian Prime Minister and the President of the European Commission today analyzed the progress of the migration pact and the implementation of the PRR in Italy, in a meeting in which they reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and both condemned the events in Brazil.

Meloni Underlined The Meeting With Ursula Von Der Leyen

Meloni underlined the meeting with Ursula von der Leyen “the commitment of the Italian Government” with the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), to fulfill the objective and guarantee the attribution of European funds to Italy, informed official sources of his office.

The Italian Prime Minister wants Italy’s PRR to be updated to cover increased costs stemming from rising raw material prices due to the war in Ukraine.

Meloni and Von der Leyen, who traveled to Rome for a ceremony in honor of former President of the European Parliament David Sassoli, who died recently, also “shared condemnation of violent acts in Brazil and solidarity with the country’s democratic institutions” .

At today’s meeting, which was attended by the Minister of European Affairs, Raffaele Fitto, the two leaders also reaffirmed their support for Ukraine and expressed “satisfaction with the signature, scheduled for Tuesday in Brussels, of the joint EU-NATO declaration “.

The meeting “provided an excellent opportunity to exchange views with a view to the extraordinary meeting of the European Council on 9 and 10 February, dedicated in particular to the economy and migration”, according to sources close to the Italian Government.

For her part, the EC president advanced in a message on social networks that discussed with Meloni “the maintenance of support for Ukraine, the supply of safe and accessible energy [in Europe], the reinforcement of the industrial competitiveness of the European Union, the advancement of migration pact and the implementation of Italy’s PRR”.

The issue of migration, however, was not detailed by either party after the meeting, knowing that it is a priority of the Italian Government that wants to see it addressed urgently in Europe, especially after Sweden, which currently has the rotating presidency of the EU, have ruled out advances in this matter.

Pope Francis, who will receive Meloni at the Vatican on Tuesday, considered it “urgent” that Europe approve a New Pact for Migration and Asylum to “implement adequate policies” that allow the “integration” of migrants, a request that also claims the Prime Minister of Italy.

Before her meeting with Meloni, the President of the Commission attended a tribute to David Sassoli, whom she said was “a great orator and great politician, who made politics out of passion and not for power” and who “would never tolerate corruption”, in a reference to the “Qatargate” scandal involving members and officials of the European Parliament.
