CAPITOL HILL POLITICS  (Washington Insider Magazine) – Fact Check: Is Donald Trump Running for Office in 2024?

It wouldn’t be the first time! In 2017, Donald Trump was inaugurated as president after winning the 2016 elections against the democratic candidate, Hilary Clinton.

During his term of office, Trump was impeached twice, due to international interference and possibly instigating insurrection during the United States Capitol Attack.

Trump is the third president to be impeached and made history as the first person to ever be impeached twice while in office. This has led many to believe that he would not be eligible for re-election.

Below, we’ll be answering your questions about whether Donald Trump is running in the 2024 election, and what the rules of the presidency have to say about him serving a second term.

What does impeachment mean?

Before we answer the question of a second possible term for Trump, it’s important to understand what impeachment is, as this will get us one step closer to our question.

Impeachment is when the president, vice president, and/or civil officers are charged with misconduct while serving in office.

The U.S. Constitution says that the reasons that a President, Vice President, or civil officer can be removed from office are treason, bribery, or other serious crimes.

Though impeachment can severely damage a President’s reputation, impeachment doesn’t automatically lead to a conviction. However, if the government official is found guilty in the trial, then they will be removed from the office and will not be able to serve in the office again.

The most extreme cases of impeachment would be if the government official was accused of treason.

When was Donald Trump impeached and was he convicted?

Trump’s first impeachment was in January 2020, when he was caught conducting a phone call with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He had been accused of asking President Zelenskyy to discredit the Democratic candidate, Joe Biden.

During Trump’s first impeachment trial, the House’s Judiciary Committee (which is responsible for overseeing all administrative activities within the Federal Court) concluded that he had ‘betrayed’ the nation.

The second case of impeachment was when Trump was accused of inciting violence during the Capitol Attack on January 6th.

The attack was said to have started at a rally That Trump had organized on January 6, 2021 at the National Mall – and during the 70-minute address, there were several instances where Trump was accused of encouraging violence and persuading attendees to ‘march on the Capitol.’

Trump was not convicted and continued to serve in office for the remainder of his term.

Can Trump actually run for president in the 2024 election?

Because Donald Trump was not convicted, he was not removed from the office, and can still run in the 2024 presidential election He has stated publicly several times that he is considering doing this in an effort to avoid a second presidential term for currently sitting President Joe Biden.

Though Trump’s credibility as President waned after insurrection at the Capitol back in January 2021, Trump still has a loyal following – and according to political experts, he’s the best Republican candidate for 2024.

However, there’s no way to know how strong his chances are at winning the presidency until the votes are tallied. Until then, Trump continues to be an active politician and Trump running in the 2024 election is ‘very likely.’
