DHS braces for inflow of migrants at southern border

DHS braces for inflow of migrants at southern border, Transatlantic Today

WASHINGTON (Washington Insider Magazine) – According to top DHS officials who addressed the media on Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security expects about as many as 18,000 migrants each day at the southern border if Title 42 is repealed.

Title 42, the contentious Trump administration regulation that deports single individuals under the pretext of a public health crisis, will be abolished, according to DHS officials.

Title 42 is now undergoing a review by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which must be concluded by March 30. Soon after, it is likely to be announced if it will be extended.

Officials claimed they ran through 3 scenarios, with the largest number of migrants crossing the border every day being 18,000, according to officials. They clarified that it is merely a forecast and that they are ready for anything. In addition, the Department of Homeland Security has established a unified information center with officials from throughout the federal government.

ABC News received a strategy plan from the Department of Homeland Security outlining the actions the agency would take in response to illegal migration trends.

Title 42 will certainly create a major spike throughout all United States borders — mainly along the Southwest border, according to the 16-page study.

Customs and Border Patrol is preparing to more than double its bus and air transit capacities and strengthen up CBP officers at surge sites in the event of huge migration figures along the border.

If a surge of migrants occurs, the agency is considering measures like setting up an online pre registration platform and dispatching extra CBP officials to the border.

In preparation for high migrant numbers, the department is installing temporary facilities.

According to CBP data, there were an average of 5,892 apprehensions across the southwest border per day in February, up from 4,753 apprehensions per day in the calendar year 2021.

According to one high ranking officer, they are observing an influx of Venezuelan, Cuban and Nicaraguan nationals.
