(Washington Insider Magazine)-The White House is combating hunger and chronic ailments related to malnutrition and food insecurity by pulling nutrition labels from the back of the packaging to the front. The proposal, known as the White House hunger plan, is a small component of the Biden Administration’s larger scheme to build a healthier America and eliminate nutrition-related diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
This strategy was first introduced Wednesday, September 28, at the White House, during a conference centered on hunger, nutrition, and health. Similar intentions in 1969 seeded programs like SNAP (food stamps) that supplied meal assistance to aid communities with inadequate diets.
The Biden Administration’s program is expecting to expand nutrient-sustaining programs and create initiatives that provide families relying on government assistance with access to modified diet plans.
Officials are speculating the program’s debut to exceed the timeline of its 1969 predecessor, which only took two years to be legislated.
However, there have been no clear discussions about an expectant timeline considering changes in legislation and regulations would require cooperation from a bisected Congress. While most of the proposals require legislation to be enforced, there are some actions the Biden Administration can implement immediately without Congress ruling.
Biden’s Hunger plan aims to illuminate the issue of food insecurity by ensuring all public school students will receive a healthy school lunch and provide access to food when schools are out of session.
This expansion of food security programs also allows previously imprisoned or college students to apply for SNAP benefits.
Indigenous food hubs will be established at schools and detention centers with support from a nutritionist working alongside the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Education, providing Indigenous families with access to wholesome, restorative foods.
President Biden reminds the crowd at the White House Congress that no parent or child should experience food insecurity or die from diet-related issues that can be avoided with access to affordable nourishment.
White House hunger plan integrates the idea of food as medicine, which opens the door for people on Medicare and Medicaid to receive assistance with dieting and nutrition counseling.
