White House Defends Biden’s Manufacturing Boom

White House Defends Biden’s Manufacturing Boom, Transatlantic Today

USA (Washington Insider Magazine)—On Tuesday, The White House cautioned against Republican steps to sabotage a manufacturing boom that Joe Biden’s administration initiated. The signature climate legislation under Biden’s vision has already brought massive advantages to the US economy.

Significantly, Investors have pledged $628bn of investments into clean energy and manufacturing. Senior officials said the Inflation Reduction Act has had the most advantages since the president entered the White House in 2021. Approximately 200,000 jobs have been created since the IRA was enacted last year.

Recently, Biden’s senior adviser in charge of the IRA’s enactment, John Podesta, criticized Republicans’ measures. They are trying to roll back the bill, which delivers vast tax exemptions for investors and producers of clean energy over the next ten years, saying they could damage investor confidence.

He also blamed Republicans for insincerity in accommodating the investment stimulated by the IRA. He even promised to scrap the bill. “The people out there at the ribbon cuttings have continued to try to repeal the provisions that are producing this tremendous story for the US economy.”

In one of her tweets, House Speaker and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi also admired the IRA. She said, “Joe Biden and Democrats delivered millions of good paying union jobs in our infrastructure law, Inflation Reduction Act and CHIPS Act because workers deserve respect, dignity and solidarity”. “In challenging times, we don’t agonise — we organise, and we unionize”!

According to a Financial Times analysis, over 80% of investment in large-scale clean energy and manufacturing was pledged in August. It happened since the IRA and Chips and Science Act were enacted and was destined for Republican congressional districts.

Further, Podesta Contended, “Members seem to be very happy to applaud those investments . . . while they’re simultaneously ignoring the fact that the companies themselves are crediting the IRA with the reason for those investments. “

As part of the president’s re-election effort, the Biden administration has made a renaissance in the US manufacturing sector. It includes job creation and revitalisation of rust-belt regions as core components of “Bidenomics”.

However, there is little chance that the initiative will land among voters. The president still encounters weak support numbers as the 2024 election campaign matures. According to a recent FT-Michigan Ross poll, only 14 % of voters believed they were better off under Biden’s administration.

Despite official claims that the IRA and manufacturing investments have brought commendable boosts to the US, the president’s economic agenda is missing popular support.

Officials said that the manufacturing boom has stimulated economic growth. It accounted for 10% of the gross domestic product growth this year. “Manufacturing investment, particularly in clean energy, has driven economic growth and is making its largest contribution to GDP growth in history this year,” Lael Brainard, Biden’s national economic adviser, told reporters on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Donald Trump, the apparent candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, is anticipated to wipe out the legislation if elected again. His Republican opponents have already resisted the IRA. They expressed that the finances involved in the $369 billion bill are outsized.
