Russia (Washington Insider Magazine)— Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven L. Basham, deputy head of US European Command (EUCOM), has forecasted that the Western defense industrial base will continue its upward trajectory, eventually outpacing Russian production capabilities. Speaking at the event “Transatlantic security after 75 years of NATO” organized by the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, Basham emphasized the accelerating capabilities of the Western defense industry, citing a sustained growth trend that will surpass Russia’s capacity.
Reevaluation of Western Defense Industrial Base
According to Zona-militar, since, Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the Western defense industrial base has come under heavy criticism due to its declining capabilities in previous decades. Despite Basham’s positive estimates, Europe, the United States, and allied nations continue to confront substantial hurdles in satisfying current demand, which is worsened by wars in Ukraine and Israel.
Basham highlighted Russia’s evolving position, once a proud defense exporter, now increasingly reliant on imports, particularly from China. He underscored the challenges Russia faces with its own equipment offset by Chinese technology.
US Commitment to Supporting Ukraine Emphasized
Regarding Washington’s support for Kyiv, Basham reiterated the importance of continuous aid, emphasizing that the defense of the nation extends beyond US borders. He stressed the necessity of unwavering support for Ukraine and the need for clearer communication with the American people.
While acknowledging the temporary pause in US military assistance to Ukraine, Basham noted its detrimental impact on Ukrainian capabilities. However, with the recent approval of a $60 billion assistance package, there is optimism for a reversal in Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
NATO Defense Vital Amidst Rising Threats
Basham emphasized the critical importance of defending NATO, asserting that Russian aggression extends beyond Ukraine. He affirmed the strengthening resolve of the United States, its allies, and partners in confronting Russian aggression.
Additionally, Basham highlighted the significance of US Armed Forces’ presence and engagement in Europe, emphasizing the necessity of continuous collaboration and integration with NATO allies.
China’s Global Threat Addressed
