US to provide Ukraine with $3 billion in aid

US to provide Ukraine with $3 billion in aid, Transatlantic Today

US(Washington Insider Magazine)– As Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine drags on, U.S. security aid is transitioning to a longer campaign that will probably keep more American military personnel in Europe in the future. This includes impending plans to reveal an additional $3 billion in aid to equip and train Ukrainian troops to fight for years to come, according to U.S. officials.

The package is anticipated to be unveiled on Wednesday, the day the conflict marks its 6-month anniversary and Ukraine marks its independence day, according to U.S. officials who spoke to The Associated Press. According to them, the funds will go into agreements for as many as 3 different kinds of drones as well as for other weapons, ammo, and equipment that might not enter combat for a year or two.

The overall aid plan, which is the biggest to date and is being supplied under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, might alter somewhat overnight, but probably not much. According to officials, it will include funding for the larger, catapult-launched ScanEagle surveillance drones, the smaller Puma drones, and for the first time, the British Vampire drone system, that can be launched from ships.

Prior to the aid’s distribution to the public, a number of officials discussed it under the condition of anonymity.

According to the sources familiar with the situation, unlike most prior financial packages, the latest funding is primarily intended to aid Ukraine in securing its medium- to long-term defensive posture. Prior shipments, the majority of which were carried out under the Presidential Drawdown Authority, were primarily intended to meet Ukraine’s more urgent demands for ammunition and weaponry. They also contained material that the Pentagon already had in hand and could be quickly dispatched.

The latest package is meant to convince Ukrainian leaders that the United States plans to maintain its assistance, irrespective of the day-to-day back and forth of the crisis, the officials said. It also provides longer-term cooperation that Ukraine may utilize for any future defense requirements.

As he renewed the alliance’s solidarity for the conflict-torn nation on Tuesday, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg mentioned the broader objective.

The conflict is stalled 6 months after Russia’s invasion as both sides exchange combat strikes and make modest gains in the south and east. Thousands of soldiers have been injured or killed on both sides, and numerous innocent civilians have also been murdered as a result of Russia’s city-bombing campaign.

There are worries that due to the upcoming holiday celebrating independence and the 6-month anniversary of the war, Russia would step up its strikes on government structures and civilian buildings in Ukraine.

The State Department and the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine released a fresh security warning for Ukraine late on Monday, reinforcing the warning that Americans there should evacuate because of the danger.

With additional assistance announcements, other NATO partners are also celebrating the day of independence.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that his nation is offering assistance of over $500 million, including sophisticated anti weapons systems. According to the German news agency dpa, the aid would also include ammo, rocket launchers, twelve armored recovery vehicles, anti-drone gear, and 3 more IRIS-T long-range air defense systems.

Some of the funds won’t be provided until next year, and the parliament still needs to approve it.

Additionally, Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, announced $3.85 million for 2 initiatives in Ukraine under the Peace and Stabilization Operations Program. Approximately $2.9 million will be used to continue the growth of Ukraine’s national police force and other emergency services, and approximately $950,000 will be used to provide assistance to the defense minister of Ukraine.

Since the inception of the Biden administration, the United States has given Ukraine over $10.6 billion in defense aid, including 19 shipments of weapons that have been taken straight from Defense Department inventory since August 2021, according to ABC NEWS

Defense commanders in the United States are also considering strategies that would increase training for Ukrainian forces outside of their nation as well as for military on Europe’s southern and eastern borders that see the greatest threat from Russian attack.
