USA (Washington Insider Magazine)— Prominent progressive groups in the United States have united to launch a coalition against the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), one of the most influential pro-Israel lobby groups. The coalition, dubbed “Reject AIPAC,” aims to counter AIPAC’s influence on US politics and its campaign to silence calls for a Gaza ceasefire.

A United Front

The coalition includes over 20 organizations, such as Justice Democrats, the Working Families Party, Jewish Voice for Peace Action (JVP Action), and IfNotNow. The group’s mission is to back progressive candidates targeted by AIPAC, push back against the group’s agenda in Congress, and call on Democratic politicians to renounce AIPAC’s support.

“AIPAC poses a significant threat to progressive values at home and Palestinian lives abroad,” said Beth Miller, political director at JVP Action.

AIPAC’s Political Power

AIPAC, known for advocating unconditional US support for Israel, has shifted its focus in recent years to direct electioneering. Its political arms, AIPAC PAC and the United Democracy Project (UDP), have invested millions in defeating progressive candidates critical of Israel.

In the 2022 elections, AIPAC targeted progressive Democrats in liberal districts, spending heavily on attack ads often unrelated to foreign policy. Despite the group’s resources, some progressive candidates, such as Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, emerged victorious.

Progressive Strategy

The “Reject AIPAC” coalition announced plans for a “seven-figure electoral defense campaign” to support candidates opposing AIPAC’s agenda. While this budget is a fraction of AIPAC’s expected nine-figure war chest, coalition members believe grassroots support can overcome the financial disparity.

“This is a David versus Goliath fight, but it’s worth fighting,” said Usamah Andrabi of Justice Democrats. “Progressive voters overwhelmingly support a ceasefire in Gaza and holding Israel accountable.”

Broader Implications

AIPAC’s influence remains strong, with bipartisan support for its positions in Congress. However, the coalition’s efforts represent growing dissent within the Democratic Party and among American voters, who increasingly question unconditional support for Israel.

“We must fight back against AIPAC’s destructive influence,” Miller said. “The US government’s policies must align with human rights and international law, not the interests of a hawkish lobby.”

Looking Ahead

As bombs continue to fall on Gaza and humanitarian conditions worsen under Israel’s blockade, the coalition seeks to shift the political narrative. Despite the challenges, progressives remain committed to defending Palestinian rights and challenging AIPAC’s dominance.

“Our fight isn’t easy,” Andrabi added, “but with the support of the American people, we can bring meaningful change.”
