WASHINGTON (Washington Insider Magazine) – The House select panel probing the Capitol insurgency now has White House data that reveal new information regarding a phone call Donald Trump made to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan on Jan. 6, 2021, as the inquiry focuses on the former President’s interactions on that day and key questions about calls between him and legislators have long been raised.
According to CNN, Trump spoke with Jordan for ten minutes on the call at the White House residence on January 6th, according to two officials who have reviewed the call logs. Jordan moved to the House floor that afternoon to oppose President Joe Biden’s Electoral College triumph being certified, while pro-Trump demonstrators invaded the US Capitol.
The panel’s investigation has focused on the events leading up to the uprising and the various ways Trump and his backers, including members of Congress, attempted to change the election results. The new information regarding Jordan’s early phone contact comes as the committee debates whether to issue a subpoena after he declined to voluntarily attend an interview.
Since admitting last year that he spoke with Trump on the phone that same day, Jordan, an Ohio Republican and Trump supporter, has dodged inquiries or given conflicting responses.
Jordan told CNN on Friday that he had many discussions with Trump on Jan. 6, but that he could only verify that he talked with Trump once he exited the House floor and that he couldn’t recall if they spoke that day.
Jordan’s prior accounts of his January 6 discussions with Trump have been contradictory.
Jordan has long been a key target for the panel’s investigation. Jordan was one of a group of Republican members whose phone records were requested by the panel in August. Jordan cautioned at the time that if the panel went after serving members of Congress, it would set a dangerous precedent.
The panel is still debating whether to serve Jordan a subpoena, a motion McCarthy and Republican Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania are considering as well.
