WASHINGTON (Washington Insider Magazine) – Senator Ted Cruz of Texas arrived in a roaring semi-truck in the Capitol rotunda on Thursday, leading a caravan that has looped the D.C. Beltway for the previous five days in opposition of COVID-19 regulations.
Fully vaccinated, the Texas senator traveled from Hagerstown, Maryland, in co-organizer Mike Landis’ truck before addressing a news conference in favor of the drivers, many of whom had come from California during late February.
While standing beside Landis as well as another co-organizer, Brian Brase, Cruz praised the drivers.
On Tuesday, the “People’s Convoy” spoke with Cruz and Republican Senator Ron Johnson, R-Wis., for a discussion panel in the Capitol and subsequently with Republican House Transportation Committee members.
The truckers have said that they will keep protesting until other congress members meet with them and their demands are satisfied. Reversing the federal state of emergency, and any current vaccination requirements, are among the demands. According to ABC NEWS, the truckers are also pushing for senate hearings on the roots of the epidemic, as well as a review into federal and state COVID actions.
However, most COVID limitations have already been abolished across the nation. Throughout the epidemic, certain states, including Florida, have maintained lenient COVID laws.
If Republicans take command of Congress in the upcoming year, Cruz, who has considered running for president in 2024, said he will push to pass legislation to back the truckers’ requests.
The senator took a shot at Democrats and several Republicans in the Congress for failing to pass legislation to repeal COVID regulations such as mandates for active duty personnel, government civilian workers, government contractors, and private-sector regulations through OSHA.
Cruz used the news conference to address a variety of contentious conservative topics, including the requirement of voter identification.
During the event, a person in the audience shouted at Cruz, “You should run for president,” in response the senator replied, “Thank you.”
