Russia (Washington Insider Magazine)— The United States has announced heightened military preparedness for its personnel stationed in Niger, citing concerns over the presence of Russian troops at the same base. The base, where approximately 100 German and 150 Italian soldiers also reside, has become a focal point of international attention due to the recent Russian deployment.

According to sources within the Nigerien security forces, the atmosphere at Air Base 101, located adjacent to Niamey’s Diori Hamani International Airport, has shifted following the arrival of Russian troops. While European forces remain relatively calm and continue their usual routines, American troops have reportedly increased their combat readiness. Observers note a noticeable uptick in the use of helmets and protective armor among American personnel, who appear visibly tense in light of the new developments.

US Response and Diplomatic Engagement

According to Espanol, In response to the changing scenario, the United States has stated that it intends to engage in discussions with Nigerien authorities on the possible departure of its forces from the country. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized Washington’s commitment to monitoring conditions in Niger and guaranteeing the safety of its troops stationed there.

Implications of Russian Deployment

According to some, Russia’s plans to deploy troops in Niger could be a calculated reaction to the US’s desire to withdraw its forces from the area. The Russian deployment is taking place at the same time that Washington and Moscow are becoming more tense, especially in the wake of the Ukrainian crisis. There are many who believe that the deployment of Russian military in Niger could exacerbate the geopolitical rivalry between the two countries.

Niger’s Response and Military Cooperation

In light of these events, Niger’s ruling military council, also known as the National Security Council, has acted decisively. The Council terminated a military cooperation agreement with the United States and restricted American military actions in Nigerien territory and airspace. Furthermore, Nigerien officials have urged for the gradual removal of US forces from the country, indicating a shift in regional military cooperation dynamics.
