Russia (Washington Insider Magazine) —The White House said it has reports of threats against entire units that refuse to follow military orders
Russia is executing soldiers trying to withdraw from a bloody new offensive in eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces have suffered “significant” losses, the White House said Thursday.
“We have information that the Russian military has been executing soldiers who refuse to follow orders,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said at a briefing.
“We also have information that Russian commanders are threatening to execute entire units if they try to retreat from Ukrainian artillery fire,” he added. “It is reprehensible.”
Kirby did not elaborate when asked about the alleged executions or how the United States had obtained the information.
Russia has stepped up attacks near the town of Avdiivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region and the northeastern city of Kupyansk in a bid to advance the front line ahead of winter.
Russians with “significant losses”
Moscow has suffered “significant losses” in the offensive, including at least 125 armored vehicles and “thousands” of casualties, Kirby said.
“It is not surprising that Russian forces have low morale,” he said.
“It is reprehensible to think that you would execute your own soldiers because they did not want to follow orders. “Threatening to execute entire units is outrageous,” the spokesperson added.
“But I think it’s a symptom of how poor Russia is. Military leaders know what they are doing and how poorly they have handled it. This from a military perspective,” he considered.
