(Washington Insider Magazine) —The Red Bull team had the objective of finishing 1-2 in the Formula 1 drivers’ world championship, something they were able to achieve after the Mexican driver, Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez finished in sixth place in the Grand Prix of the Vegas.
After this achievement, the head of Red Bull, Christian Horner, showered the Mexican driver with praise, after recovering from seventeenth position due to the damage suffered to the wing by the incident between Valtteri Bottas and Fernando Alonso and recovering 15 positions.
Horner mentioned: “He came from the back of the field and led the race. So it’s unfortunate to lose second place, but by getting second place in the championship you also know that it’s been an incredible season for us and today is kind of a summer for the kind of year we’ve been having.”
He also mentioned about the 1-2 they achieved with Max Verstappen and Checo Pérez in the world drivers’ championship, a result that they had not achieved as a team during their time on the top circuit.
“It is something that as a team we had not achieved… what more can you ask of your drivers than first and second in the world drivers’ championship. His form and his pace were there today; So in the last two, three races we saw them in shape again,” said the manager.
Regarding the race that took place this Sunday in the Strip area, Horner pointed out that he was delighted by the speed that was experienced throughout it.
“I think it was a great exciting race. You have long straights, large braking zones and no grip, which is very complicated for the drivers. I think it was a great Grand Prix and the speeds around here are crazy,” he noted.
More praise from Red Bull
For his part, Helmut Marko, Red Bull sports advisor, recognized two important things; The first, that they arrived in Las Vegas with different configurations for Checo Pérez and Max Verstappen, which made the Mexican ‘vulnerable’ on the straights, however, with everything and the ‘strategies’ tilted in favor of Max, Pérez managed to sign another comeback .
“We approach the Grand Prix with two different wings and settings for Verstappen and Pérez. This made Checo vulnerable on the straights, but he still drove a great race. We are proud of him, since for the first time we will finish the Drivers’ Championship with first and second place,” said Marko.
Of course, Helmut assured that the team is very proud of Checo for giving them a historic result, especially after such a difficult season for him in which he had to overcome several difficult results.
