(Washington Insider Magazine)-of engagement is reaching record lows, as Fortune reports that over 86% of employees worldwide feel disengaged from their roles. This, in addition to the collective shift in focus provided by the Great Resignation has led to a record number of employees “quiet quitting” their job. While the name can be confusing, it doesn’t require you to actually depart from your role. Rather, as many Gen Z-ers would say, it requires you to “act your wage.”
Pay discrepancy is becoming a hot topic amid record-setting inflation around the world, causing many virtual employees to re-evaluate their current situation to determine if it truly suits your needs.
Quiet quitting embodies a true shift away from hustle culture and offers a welcoming embrace to a more balanced, slowed, and present lifestyle – allowing employees to be in the moment rather than in their inbox around the clock.
Statistics around quiet quitting are limited sine there isn’t a way to truly track. However, executive team members are voicing frustration at the sudden seeming lack of motivation and initiative.
Team members have rebutted, stating that they are finally learning to draw some much needed boundaries in the virtual work space. Many believe that for far too long, the workplace has settled into an unhealthy space – filled with demands, overtime, and underpayment. The lack of line between virtual and in-office work due to COVID-19 has caused extended hours, mental health problems, and demanding bosses pushing too-tired team members, resulting in the completely limbo we’re in now: burnt out employees and privileged employers.
Simply put, quiet quitting is drawing a boundary and halting work at an appropriate time – turning on do not disturb mode until the next day of business hours. This is helpful, as the endless pings from Slack, Teams, and hundreds of other programs can be enough to send even the most patient co-worker into a full-on frenzy.
This new work trend comes in the wake of many trying to rebuild and revitalize their lives – seizing the moment and chasing their dreams with the realization that life is short and can be halted at any time.
We look forward to seeing how this trend play out in the 2022 workplace.
