Doha(Washington Insider Magazine) -In recent years, Qatar has made significant strides in reforming its labour laws and regulations. These reforms have been widely praised by international organizations and labour rights groups.
Qatar’s labour reform process began in earnest in 2009, when the country’s Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, decreed a new labour law. This law abolished the sponsorship system, which had previously allowed employers to control the movement of their workers. It also introduced a minimum wage, set at QR1,000 (US$275) per month, and created a independent labour disputes committee to hear workers’ grievances.
Qatar has a wide range of working class from many parts of the country. Most of them are working and are changing jobs in construction. This is the reason why the actual occupation of the workers is not reflected in any of the administrative records. Some limitations are set and a concrete conclusion is not easy to draw.
Since the enforcement of labor laws, a lot of good changes are seen. The program is working harder with MOL to review the classification of occupations. Most of them are used for the private sector in Qatar. The labor market is huge and it is useful to analyze the correct form of data.
MOL Has Introduced Several Changes
Over the last year, MOL is introducing plenty of procedural changes. Most workers send applications to change their jobs whenever they like. Earlier they didn’t have this privilege and were stuck with the same job for years. Due to long working hours, their health deteriorated to a certain extent. The platform is now functioning for the better and will ensure that the applications are reviewed on time.
In the first nine months of 2022 things have changed for the better. MOL has revoked the licenses of those agencies that are hard towards migrant workers. They are working harder to raise awareness and come up with good strategies. Additionally, comprehensive training will be given to the inspectors in the coming few months.
About the operations happening in the Qatar Visa Centers there is a strong exchange going on between representatives. MOI and International Trade Union Confederation are meeting the affiliates from (ITUC) Asia-Pacific. They will discuss plans when it comes to the expansion of stronger laws. They will form sectors in six major regions in the city.

Equality & Diversity At The Workplace
As a part of a new capacity-building program, MOL and ILO are developing new training activities. They will be working against discrimination, violence, and harassment in the workplace. These joint committees have come into the picture in September last year. They will review new policies that will help bring relief to the migrant workers.
In March 2022, MOL organized an event along with the Ministry of Social Development and Family. The National Human Rights Committee is also playing an important role in it. Speakers from various institutions talked about women’s growth and development. These parties discussed gender equality and believe in improving the safety of females in all sectors.
Social protection happens to the new element of the MOL-IOL technical program. ILO specialists will strengthen the security rules and work in the favor of everyone. This discussion refers to the ongoing reforms related to health care. They will focus more on bringing relief to injured employees at work.
MOL and ILO continue to collaborate with IDWF to raise awareness among domestic workers. A new Law No. 15 of 2017 is designed to cater to the needs of domestic workers. It doesn’t matter what changes a certain employee wants. They must be under full safety and gain other benefits.
