US (Washington Insider Magazine) -Nancy Pelosi, the former Democratic House Speaker, strongly criticized Donald Trump’s first visit to the U.S. Capitol since the January 6, 2021 attack, accusing him of returning with the same intent to undermine democracy.
In a statement Thursday, Pelosi condemned Trump’s meeting with congressional Republicans ahead of the 2024 election, calling it a symbolic return to the scene of a crime that he had deliberately incited.
“Today, the instigator of an insurrection is returning to the scene of the crime,” Pelosi said. She highlighted the gravity of the January 6 assault, referencing the display of Nazi and Confederate flags inside the Capitol, and described the attack as a “crime against the constitution” and a violent disruption of the peaceful transfer of power.
The attack, which saw rioters storming the Capitol, resulted in deaths, injuries, and lasting trauma, Pelosi added. Her own office was overrun during the chaos, as rioters called out her name while rampaging through the halls of Congress.
Pelosi’s statement also took aim at Trump’s recent political rhetoric, noting his promises of authoritarian action if reelected, and accusing him of having “cemented his legacy of shame” in the Capitol.
Following Pelosi’s scathing remarks, Trump reportedly made bizarre comments in his Thursday morning meeting with House Republicans, referencing an imagined romantic relationship between himself and Pelosi. He allegedly claimed that one of Pelosi’s daughters had joked about the two being a perfect match if circumstances were different, despite their age difference.
The claim was quickly refuted by Christine Pelosi, one of the former Speaker’s daughters, who took to social media to call Trump’s comments a “lie” and described his obsession with her mother as another sign of his unfitness for office.
A spokesperson for Pelosi added, “That guy has clearly lost his marbles. Not that he had many to begin with.”
