(Washington Insider Magazine) –  Niger’s democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum has been ousted in a shocking coup led by the presidential guards tasked with protecting him. This unprecedented power grab has suspended the nation’s constitution and installed Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani as the new head of state. Bazoum, who made history as the first elected leader to succeed another since Niger gained independence in 1960, now finds himself in captivity.

Geographically significant, Niger is the largest country in West Africa, strategically positioned in the Sahel region, which is grappling with military unrest and jihadist activity. Historically, Western nations have viewed Niger as a stabilizing force against disorder and Russian influence. However, this coup marks a troubling shift.

The Importance of Niger

Niger plays a crucial role in regional stability and counter-terrorism efforts. It hosts military bases from France and the US and is considered a key ally in the fight against Islamist insurgents. The US State Department regards Niger as vital for stability in the Sahel and a dependable partner in counter-terrorism initiatives.

Despite its geopolitical significance, Niger faces severe economic challenges, with the population consistently ranking among the lowest in living standards globally. Rich in uranium, the nation contributes 7% of the world’s supply, yet the wealth has not translated into improved living conditions for its citizens.

Reasons Behind the Coup

The Sahel is known for its instability, with democratic governance in retreat. Jihadist groups have increasingly taken control, particularly in the tri-border areas of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. While mutinous soldiers cite the deteriorating security landscape as their rationale for the coup, Niger had been managing its insurgency better than its neighbors prior to the takeover.

Public sentiment may lean towards supporting military intervention as a means to combat rising violence, yet the effectiveness of a military junta in addressing these challenges remains questionable. Coups in Mali and Burkina Faso have not significantly mitigated jihadist attacks in those nations.

International Response to the Coup

France, Niger’s former colonial ruler, condemned the military takeover and reaffirmed its support for President Bazoum. The French foreign ministry emphasized that it does not recognize the new authorities and called for the restoration of constitutional order. Similarly, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has demanded Bazoum’s immediate release, and various international organizations, including the African Union and ECOWAS, have condemned the coup.

Notably, Yevgeny Prigozhin, leader of Russia’s Wagner Group, has publicly supported the coup, framing it as a struggle against colonial influences. Supporters of the coup have been seen waving both Nigerien and Russian flags, raising concerns about a potential shift towards Russian alliances.

Implications for Regional Stability

The overthrow of President Bazoum places Niger’s future in jeopardy. There are fears that Tchiani’s government may drift away from its Western partners, following the examples of Burkina Faso and Mali, both of which have strengthened ties with Russia after similar military coups. The ongoing crisis highlights the fragility of governance in the Sahel and the complex interplay of local, regional, and international influences that will shape Niger’s path forward.
