Yesterday the police were called at 9:30 am. to the “Academy for Personal Leadership and Excellence” school located at E. 184th St. in Fordham Heights after school security officers alerted that a student had a weapon in his backpack.
The boy was taken out of class and a .22-caliber handgun and an imitation pistol found in his bag were confiscated, police said.

Young people are increasingly protagonists in gun violence in New York as victims and perpetrators, particularly shootings and attacks with bladed weapons. In September an NYPD report found that recidivism among teens had risen sharply over the past five years and the number of gunmen and their underage victims had tripled in recent years.

In November, an 18-year-old boy was shot to death near a Queens high school. Hours earlier that same day, officials from a prestigious autonomous school in The Bronx (NYC) found a weapon inside the backpack of a 6-year-old boy.
In October, a 16-year-old student was arrested when he tried to smuggle a loaded gun, marijuana and thousands of dollars through security at his Bronx high school.
Also in October, in the same week, there were at least two cases of extreme school violence in New York: a 15-year-old student was stabbed and another young man of the same age was arrested after an altercation near a school in the Bronx.
Two days earlier, a 19-year-old school assistant was fatally shot while leaving class by a teenager who confessed to the crime in Brooklyn.
