USA (Washington Insider Magazine) – Muslim Women for Harris-Walz announced its dissolution after the Democratic National Convention (DNC) declined a request to allow a Palestinian American speaker at the event. The group stated that it could no longer, “in good conscience,” continue its support following the refusal from Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign.
For months, the uncommitted movement has advocated for Democratic leaders to impose an arms embargo on Israel and work toward a ceasefire in Gaza. This group, formed during the Democratic primaries, has urged progressives to vote “uncommitted” to withhold support from then-presidential candidate Joe Biden.
Protests and Tensions Rise at the Convention
As the Democratic Party attempts to convey unity at its convention, tensions have escalated. Delegates from the uncommitted movement staged a sit-in outside the Chicago convention venue, demanding that a Palestinian speaker be given a platform. The protest was one of several pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the city, calling for an end to the war in Gaza.
Democratic Party Faces Internal Conflict
The Democratic Party is experiencing internal divisions over whether to allow a Palestinian speaker at the convention. Supporters, including the United Auto Workers Union and progressive House members, argue that the voices of Palestinian Americans should be heard. However, others within the party, including the progressive Rebellion PAC members, have cautioned against giving the uncommitted movement a platform, fearing it could disrupt the event.
Mixed Reactions to the DNC Decision
According to USAToday, Waleed Shahid, a founder of the uncommitted movement, criticized the DNC’s decision not to include a Palestinian speaker, stating that the Harris campaign had denied their request, citing the importance of the event to the vice president’s political career. In contrast, some Democratic leaders argue that allowing such a platform could jeopardize the party’s unity and focus.
As the convention continues, the Democratic Party remains divided over the issue, with ongoing protests and debates highlighting the challenges of maintaining unity while addressing diverse perspectives within the party.
