(Washington Insider Magazine) – Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the man was identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, noting there were no other fugitive suspects.
Confirmation From Authorities
Los Angeles area authorities confirmed Sunday that the man who fatally shot 10 people and wounded 10 others at a dance club Saturday night died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside a van he used to escape from the police.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the man was identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran, noting that there were no other suspects on the run.
Luna did not have the exact ages of the victims at this time, but he said they all appeared to be in their 50s. Seven of the wounded are still hospitalized, added Luna, who said the motive for the attack was still unclear.
In the hours of Sunday morning, law enforcement entered the truck after surrounding it for hours before entering. Taking a look inside the vehicle, officers noticed a person who appeared to be slumped over the wheel, whose body was removed from the vehicle.
The vehicle was found in Torrance, another community that is home to a significant number of Asian-Americans.
Prior to the discovery, Sheriff Luna posted photos of an Asian man believed to be the suspect, the Associates Press reported.
During the New Year celebrations, the subject broke into a dance hall during the Chinese New Year celebrations in Monterey Park, a city with a predominantly Asian population. It is speculated that 20 minutes earlier he had tried to set fire to another dance hall, but he was neutralized and managed to flee, authorities said.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a wave of fear has rippled through Asian-American communities in the Los Angeles area, and marred Lunar New Year festivities across the country. Likewise, other cities had to send authorities to monitor the celebrations.
