KENTUCKY (Washington Insider Magazine) – According to authorities, the number of deaths from the disastrous floods that struck eastern Kentucky is still rising.
According to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a total of 28 individuals have been officially deceased, but that figure is certain to rise once again. In a recorded video that was uploaded online, Beshear stated that the death toll included at least 4 kids.
Beshear spoke of “widespread damage” that resulted in the displacement of thousands of individuals, as well as widespread power outages, flooded schools, torn down homes, and washed out roadways. On Sunday, Beshear is anticipated to travel to a few of the flood-affected areas.
On Monday, further rain is expected in the region as search and rescue crews continue to seek for people who have gone missing. In the same area that saw the disastrous flooding that started with heavy rains on Wednesday, 2 to 4 inches of rain may fall, which may potentially cause flood levels to increase once more.
Since the floods started, more than 600 individuals have been rescued by boat and aircraft, according to Beshear.
According to ABC NEWS, the devastation in Kentucky is the most recent instance of significant flooding to occur in the United States in less than a week.
Friday in Las Vegas saw rising floods on the streets and in parking garages due to heavy downpours that produced flash flooding.
Due to the megadrought, the soil in the area had dried up to the point that it was unable to absorb the high rainfall, which contributed to the floods.
A record-breaking 8.56 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours near St. Louis earlier this week, causing a flash flooding emergency. After the water started to recede on Tuesday, one individual was discovered dead in a vehicle, according to authorities.
Beshear stated that Kentucky is trying to construct shelters and urged individuals who wish to assist to give water or cleaning goods. President Joe Biden authorized a disaster declaration last week.
