(Washington Insider Magazine) –  Abortion is a topic that raises many questions and concerns, and one specific question that often comes up is, “Is abortion legal in Cyprus? In March 2018, a momentous change occurred in Cyprus as the country embraced a new law, making abortion legal. This decision has brought about a significant shift in the reproductive rights landscape of Cyprus, allowing individuals to make choices regarding their pregnancies based on their circumstances.

In the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus joins a group of nations where abortion is permissible under certain conditions. Specifically, Cyprus’s abortion law grants the right to terminate a pregnancy upon request until the 12th week of gestation. Furthermore, in cases involving rape or incest, the law extends the window for abortion until the 19th week. These provisions ensure that women have options in situations that can cause immense emotional and psychological distress.

Before the legal reform, abortion in Cyprus was only permitted in limited circumstances. These included cases where the fetus displayed abnormalities when the life or mental well-being of the pregnant woman was at risk or in instances of sexual assault or rape. However, the recent legislation reflects a progressive stance, recognizing the autonomy of individuals and acknowledging their right to make decisions about their own bodies and reproductive health.

The legal status of abortion in Cyprus represents a significant step forward, aligning with the principles of personal choice, bodily integrity, and gender equality. This development allows individuals to exercise their reproductive rights responsibly, considering their unique circumstances and needs.

Is Abortion Legal In Cyprus

In Cyprus, the legality of abortion is an important topic. Similar to many other European countries, Cyprus allows abortions to be performed in public hospitals or certified clinics. However, there are certain restrictions in place. Abortions cannot be carried out solely for economic or social reasons, even if requested by the pregnant woman or her family.

Unlike Malta, Cyprus has more flexible abortion laws. The following circumstances allow for abortion procedures to be performed:

  • To safeguard the well-being of the woman’s physical or mental health
  • To preserve the life of the pregnant woman
  • To end a pregnancy that has occurred as a result of rape or incest
  • To end the pregnancy in the case of fetal impairment

It is important to keep in mind that healthcare providers can refuse to perform abortions. However, suppose the procedure is necessary to save the woman’s life or prevent significant harm to her physical and/or mental well-being. In that case, it must be carried out in the presence of at least two gynecologists or obstetricians.

For unmarried women over the age of 18, they have the authority to provide their consent for an abortion. However, specific requirements must be met to proceed with the procedure in Cyprus. These requirements include:

  • If the woman is married, her spouse’s consent is necessary
  • In the case of pregnancies involving minors or girls under the age of 18, written approval from a parent or legal guardian is required

These guidelines aim to ensure that abortion procedures in Cyprus are carried out with careful consideration and adhere to the legal framework.

Abortion Cost In Cyprus

Now, let’s talk about the financial aspect. The expense of undergoing an abortion in Cyprus depends on various factors. Primarily, it is determined by the type of procedure chosen—either a medical or surgical termination.

Additionally, the cost may vary based on the gestational age of the pregnancy. The expenses tend to be lower if the pregnancy is within the first 12 weeks.

For women in Cyprus with Medicare cards, the out-of-pocket cost for surgical abortion is approximately $470. This amount covers the necessary expenses associated with the termination procedure. However, it’s important to note that the cost may increase if the pregnancy has progressed beyond the 12-week mark.

Absorption Pills

Is abortion legal in Cyprus? Yes, abortion is legal in Cyprus, and women have access to abortion pills at women’s medical centers as long as they are within the first 11 weeks of their pregnancy.

When women in Cyprus choose abortion pills, they have more flexibility regarding where and when they undergo the procedure. They are not required to be physically present at medical facilities or private clinics throughout the process. Still, they should be able to reach out to their specialized doctors by phone in case of an emergency, as professional advice is essential during abortions.

While abortion pills can help prevent unwanted pregnancies, they can also pose risks. If a woman’s body doesn’t respond well to the pills, she may experience excessive bleeding, infections, or allergic reactions to the medication. Women must consult healthcare professionals and undergo any necessary tests to ensure their safety and understand how to correctly use the prescribed medications.
