Iran seeks assurances US won’t abandon deal, Transatlantic Today

TEL AVIV ((Washington Insider Magazine) – The next pact over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Israel’s prime minister, is less rigorous than the last accord, which was left in shambles when the Us withdrew after being pushed by Israel.

In Vienna, world countries have been talking in an attempt to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement, which relieved Iran of sanctions in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program. Israel has spoken out against the agreement and encouraged negotiators to adopt a tough stance against Iran in the forthcoming round of talks.

Meanwhile, Iranian MPs have asked Iran’s president to seek assurances from the US and 3 European nations that they would not pull out of the agreement when it is renegotiated, according to ABC NEWS.

“The emerging new deal is shorter and weaker than the previous one,” Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said at a Cabinet meeting.

Iran will be able to support its proxies across Israel’s borders if sanctions are lifted, according to Bennett.

Iran is Israel’s most dangerous adversary. It was a vocal opponent of the 2015 agreement and has been watching the current discussions with bated breath.

However, the Iranian parliament’s news agency, ICANA, said that 250 parliamentarians signed a statement urging President Ebrahim Raisi and his negotiation team to get guarantees from the US and the major 3 European countries that they will not pull out of the deal if it is renegotiated.

Any proposed deal among Iran, as well as the other nations in Vienna, might be approved or rejected by Iran’s hard-line parliament.

Because of its departure from the original agreement, the US has engaged in the present discussions in an indirect manner. President Joe Biden has expressed his desire to rejoin the agreement.

The United States re-imposed harsh sanctions on the Islamic State under Trump’s administration. In defiance of the agreement, Tehran has increased the purity and quantity of uranium it enriches and stockpiles, in violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA.

Iran has argued for a long time that its nuclear program is benign. However, the country’s withdrawal from the agreement has unnerved its arch-enemy Israel as well as foreign powers.

Tehran has begun refining uranium to 60% quality, a small step away from the 90% required for an atomic weapon, and spinning much more modern centrifuges than those allowed under the deal.

Iran’s foreign minister stated that “the ball is now in their court” for Western nations to demonstrate flexibility.
