Indiana Congresswoman Dies in Car Crash

Indiana Congresswoman Dies in Car Crash, Transatlantic Today

(Washington Insider Magazine)-Indiana Congresswoman Jackie Walorski died in a car crash yesterday afternoon, stunning thousands of constituents across the state.

The Republican congresswoman had been traveling with two office aides at the time, driving to an obligation when the head-on collision occurred. The aides, Zachery Potts (27) and Emma Thomson (28) both passed at the time of the accident, as well as the driver of the oncoming car.

Congresswoman Walorski was 58 at the time of her death and is survived by her husband: Dean Swihart.

Mr. Swihart was notified of her passing via the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office the afternoon of the crash. Mr. Swihart has been dealing with his wife’s death privately at this time, prompting her offices to release a formal statement requesting thoughts and prayers for her family members.

Congresswoman Walorski had been a major proponent for change–actively serving on the House ways and means committee and also on the subcommittee for worker and family support. She was currently on the election trail for a sixth term in her district, hoping to create further change in Congressional agriculture and food policy.

The passing of Congresswoman Walorski was impactful, weighing heavy on the hearts of fellow Congressmembers and government leaders. President Joe Biden released a statement thanking Walorski for her passion and commitment, honoring her for years of service in the public sector. This action crossed party lines, and showed promise to a less turbulent political climate in the face of adversity and trial.

Beyond the President’s statement and honor, several other co-workers and Congress members were affected by her death. Among those who vocalized their support and condolences were House Minority leader Kevin McCarthy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Republican Senator Todd Young.

Congresswoman Walorski made an impact that resonated across both political parties, working to enact true change–for her constituents and fellow American citizens across all classes and creeds.

Flags were flown at half-mast today by request of Speaker Pelosi to honor her contributions to local and federal governments.
