WASHINGTON (Washington Insider Magazine)  – Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the United States House of Representatives, has expressed her concern for democracy if Republicans reclaim the chamber in November.

Winning was vitally essential for democracy, Pelosi said in an interview on Monday night at the 2022 Toner Prizes for political journalism.

“If the Republicans ever get the gavel, she worries for democracy.  That’s something that can’t be allowed to happen. In November, democracy will be on the ballot.

In the first midterm elections after a presidential election, voters traditionally punish the parties that control the White House. Joe Biden’s poll numbers are in the gutter, and his government is dealing with significant economic headwinds along with the Ukraine issue. Republicans are favored widely to win the House back and maybe the Senate this year.

They were going to win the majority, and that was not going to be a five-seat majority, House minority leader Kevin McCarthy told Punchbowl News last week.

Republicans in the Senate are looking forward to dominating committees and exercising subpoena power, according to Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. “Like a bug in a nudist colony, it’s a target-rich environment,” Johnson remarked of the GOP.

Johnson has expressed an interest in looking into the federal COVID response as well as the president’s son Hunter Biden’s business dealings. The committee examining Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn his election loss and the Capitol attack that followed is expected to be scrapped by House Republicans, according to most experts.

I have no intention of the Democrats losing the Congress in November,” Pelosi stated.

There was nothing conventional anymore, the speaker said, dismissing the so-called conventional wisdom about the midterm elections. Because of how people communicate with social media and how they receive their information, how they’re called to action, how they’re called to meetings, and the rest is quite different.  As a result, all previous election assumptions are no longer valid.

They had a strategy, she continued. They  have a vision of victory. They will  make a strategy to finish it, and they own the ground.

Pelosi also questioned the accuracy of polling on Biden’s popularity, claiming that redistricting, a process commonly assumed to favor Republicans with increased state governments, wouldn’t necessarily leave the Democrats with a disadvantage.

Everyone predicted that redistricting would be disastrous for Democrats, Pelosi remarked. “Do you recall that?” That is not the case. That is not the case. If anything, they will gain seats rather than lose the 10 to 15 seats that popular wisdom predicted they’d lose. There is no longer anything customary, and it surely isn’t wisdom. No one is going to reject the president.
