Global Leaders Condemn Coup Attempt Against Niger's President Bazoum

(Washington Insider Magazine) –  World leaders and regional blocs have strongly condemned the coup attempt against Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum by members of the presidential guard. The presidency tweeted that the guards engaged in an “anti-Republican demonstration” and attempted to garner support from other security forces but failed.

The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) labeled the incident an “attempted coup d’état.” United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denounced any efforts to seize power by force and emphasized the need to respect Niger’s constitution. The United States expressed deep concern, urging the immediate release of President Bazoum. France, along with Algeria, which shares a border with Niger, also issued statements condemning the coup attempt.

The African Union called for a unified condemnation from Nigeriens and the broader African community, demanding the immediate return of the soldiers involved to their barracks. Algeria expressed deep concern over the situation and urged an end to the violence, highlighting the need for stability in the region.
