BRUSSELS (Washington Insider Magazine)— The European Union, France, and Germany have announced the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Its Neighbours, set to take place in Paris on April 15, 2024. The event marks one year since the conflict in Sudan erupted, causing one of the world’s largest displacement crises.
Senior Officials Meeting in Preparation
In preparation for the conference, a Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) convened in Brussels today, chaired by EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič. The meeting brought together EU member states, key donors, Sudan’s neighbors, the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and various NGOs.
The SOM aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan and surrounding regions, evaluate ongoing responses, and emphasize adherence to International Humanitarian Law.
Funding and Key Objectives
The conference seeks to:
- Urge conflicting parties to respect humanitarian laws.
- Mobilize additional international funding to address the crisis.
- Foster collaborative efforts among global humanitarian actors.
The EU has already allocated €72 million for Sudan’s humanitarian response in 2024. Through the European Humanitarian Response Capacity (EHRC), two Humanitarian Air Bridge operations have delivered critical aid to Chad and Sudan since the crisis began.
A United Global Effort
The April conference, co-organized by the European Commission, France, and Germany, underscores a collective commitment to addressing the escalating needs of Sudanese civilians and the millions displaced.
As the international community gathers, the event will be a pivotal moment to reinforce support and chart a sustainable path forward for Sudan and its neighbors.
