China (Washington Insider Magazine)— Chinese Defence Minister Dong Jun says his military is ready to “forcefully” stop Taiwan’s independence, but called for greater exchanges with the United States over the issue. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue conference in Singapore on Sunday, Dong said Taiwan was the “core of core issues” for China, but Taiwan’s governing Democratic Progressive Party is incrementally pursuing separatism and bent on erasing Chinese identity.

 Taiwan’s Position and Recent Tensions

China considers Taiwan its territory, despite strong objections from Taipei. Last month, Beijing conducted war games around the island in response to the inauguration of President William Lai Ching-te, whom China labels a “separatist.” Dong condemned recent statements by Taiwan’s leaders, asserting that they betray the Chinese nation and will be historically disgraced. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to peaceful reunification but warned that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will act decisively against any attempts at Taiwan’s independence.

Taiwan’s Response and US-China Military Communications

Reacting to Dong’s statements, Taiwan’s government expressed regret over the “provocative and irrational” remarks. Dong’s comments followed the first significant face-to-face meeting in 18 months between the defense chiefs of China and the US. During the hour-long discussion with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Dong advocated for increased exchanges and cooperation, stressing the need for mutual understanding despite military differences.

US and Chinese Military Dialogue Resumption

According to Aljazeera, after the meeting, Austin announced that telephone communications between US and Chinese military commanders would resume “in the coming months.” Meanwhile, China praised the “stabilizing” effect of the renewed security relations. Efforts to resume military-to-military dialogue are part of broader attempts by President Joe Biden’s administration and China to ease tensions, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent visit to Beijing and Shanghai.

 South China Sea Disputes

Addressing the South China Sea, Dong warned of “limits” to Beijing’s restraint amidst confrontations with Philippine vessels. He accused the US of using the Philippines to provoke China in the region. Despite maintaining restraint, Dong indicated that China would respond if provocations continued.
