Checo Pérez on his relationship with Verstappen: “The media seems to want to create rivalries”, Transatlantic Today

US (Washington Insider Magazine) —This weekend the Mexican Grand Prix is taking place and as expected all the spotlights are on Sergio ‘Checo’ Pérez who pointed out that Max Verstappen should not feel insecure about being in his country.

Pérez pointed out that it is important to set a good example for fans around the world of good behavior and put aside the revalence that the media has created and has been taken to other levels.

“It is important to spread this message. The media seems to want to create rivalries off the court,” Pérez said.

And he highlighted: “This is a great sport. We are an example for the new generations. The important thing is to focus on the sport. Everything that happens on the track has to stay there. That is the best message we can give as a country to the rest of the world. There is nothing wrong. The most important thing is that he stays on the track.”

Regarding the Mexicans’ view of Verstappen, he said: “We are all rivals, but at the same time we are also athletes. We always want the best for ourselves. Max and I are on the same team. We both want to win and we both give our best. Suppose I am fighting Fernando in the race. Off the court, he is not my rival, we only fight on the court. But like I said, the media likes to create this rivalry on the side of the court. I do not like that. It is important that the fans know that.”

Verstappen considers ‘Checo’ as “charming”

“Charming,” said Max Verstappen about Checo. “I have so many memories with Checo, he’s always a lot of fun, although he’s also a little disoriented, which I like and that’s why he’s ‘charming’.”

For his part, Christian Horner, head of the team, joked about the role that Checo plays within the team and described him as an excellent person, but a terrible golfer.

“He is a good boy, he is someone very popular on the team, although he is a very bad golfer,” said Horner.

For this dynamic, other members of Red Bull such as Alice Hedworth, Jo Canales or Luis Aguirre were also consulted and their answers varied with qualifications about Checo Pérez such as: “Resilient, humble, determined, extravagant, fighter.”
