US(Washington Insider Magazine) -The winter storm that affects more than 200 million people in the US has caused at least 9 deaths and power outages to more than 1 million.
Historic Winter Storm
Several people have died from a historic winter storm that has knocked out power to more than 1 million people in the United States.
At least nine people have died across the United States, after a man was found dead Friday in Memphis, NBC News reported. Weather-related deaths have also been reported in Kentucky, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
More than 200 million people, about 60% of the US population, are currently under some type of weather warning or advisory.
Effected State
The winter storm reached the category of a bomb cyclone, a weather phenomenon that forms when cold, dry air from the north collides with warm, humid air from the tropics, causing temperatures to drop rapidly in a short time. The danger zone stretched from Canada to Mexico and from Washington state to Florida.
“In addition to very cold temperatures, strong winds from the front will produce dangerous wind chill readings across most of the central and eastern US,” the National Weather Service (NWS) said in a bulletin.
Many airports in the northern part of the country have reported widespread flight cancellations.
Alaska Airlines and Allegiant Air canceled more than a third of their flights on Friday. More than 400 Southwest Airlines flights were delayed.
Brutal cold is expected to continue through the holiday weekend across much of the eastern US, with wind chill watches extending as far south as Florida.
