Washington, DC (Washington Insider Magazine)—National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan plans to travel to Saudi Arabia and Israel this weekend amid the rising tensions over the Israeli military operation in Rafah, three U.S. and Israeli officials with knowledge of the plans tell Axios. This visit takes place against the backdrop of rising tensions over military operations in Rafah.

Pressure to Avoid Major Offensives in Gaza

According to Infobae, the timing of the trip is crucial, as the Biden administration wants to put pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his war cabinet to refrain from major attacks on the city in the southern Gaza Strip. The region has become a focal point for millions of displaced Palestinians and serves as an important access point for humanitarian aid.Efforts to Dissuade Major Escalations

Currently, Israeli military actions in Rafah have been limited in scope. However, the US administration, in coordination with Israel, is working to prevent further escalation. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby revealed ongoing discussions aimed at providing alternative strategies to combat Hamas without resorting to large-scale ground operations in Rafah.

Humanitarian Concerns and US Response

To avoid a humanitarian crisis, the United States has offered Israel its assistance in developing a strategy that lowers civilian casualties. This involves providing resources for the safety and well-being of civilians in Rafah, such as housing, sanitation, food, water, and medical care.

US Position on Arms Shipment

President Biden recently signaled a shift in US policy, announcing the suspension of arms shipments to Israel should major offensives proceed in Rafah. This stance underscores Washington’s commitment to preventing civilian casualties and lessening the impact of conflict on innocent lives.

Israeli Military Actions Continue

Despite diplomatic efforts, Israeli forces have continued their advance into Rafah, with a focus on targeting Hamas militants. Recent reports indicate incursions into the western part of the city, resulting in clashes with armed groups. Additionally, selective operations have been conducted in neighboring areas, further intensifying the conflict.

Ongoing Conflict Dynamics

The situation remains fluid, with Hamas militants evading Israeli advances and regrouping in previously targeted areas. The conflict zone continues to witness military engagements, underscoring the complexity and volatility of the situation in Gaza.

As tensions persist, Sullivan’s diplomatic mission holds significant importance in mitigating further escalation and fostering dialogue between the parties involved.
