(Washington Insider Magazine) – Payton Thompson, a 9-year-old girl, tragically died in a massive residential fire in Brooklyn. In recent weeks there has been a tragic streak of children killed in fires in New York.
Nearly one hundred people including friends, family and neighbors in the community came together to mourn Payton Thompson, a 9-year-old girl who tragically died in a massive fire at her home in Brooklyn (NYC).
The three-alarm fire started around 5:20 a.m. Friday inside the three-story home located on Howard Ave. near Blake Ave., in the Brownsville neighborhood, according to FDNY.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Sunday when mourners laid flowers, balloons and teddy bears in front of the multi-family home where the fire quickly spread to the top floor.
The victim’s mother, Regina Thompson, broke down in tears Sunday as she recounted the latest text message from her daughter. “She was so sweet. She was so smart. She would text you any day, any time, [saying] ‘I love you.’
The last text the girl sent her read: “Mommy, I love you so much,” Thompson told the Daily News. “I discarded it because she was sending a lot [text messages], not knowing that it would be the last time my baby could tell me that she loved me,” she lamented.
“The initial call was for a smoke odor,” FDNY Deputy Chief James Carney previously said. “When we arrived there was a strong fire on the second floor.”
The girl was the last of the residents removed from the building. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but she could not be saved. Hours later, also on Friday, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer mother and her 6-year-old daughter died when her home in New Jersey caught fire.
In recent weeks there has been a tragic spate of children killed in fires in New York. Three brothers died as a result of a fire that broke out on December 23 in Staten Island, including twin boys.
Days later, on New Year’s Eve, five minors died when their home in Buffalo (NY) caught fire, after the historic winter storm that hit that region.
