SACRAMENTO (Washington Insider Magazine) – Candles, flowers and stuffed animals line the downtown streets less than 2 blocks from California’s picturesque state Capitol park, where 6 individuals were killed early Sunday in a shooting incident that wounded 12 others.
Hours after officials confirmed an arrest in the tragic shooting, glass shards lay inside a shut jewelry store as family and friends gathered to memorialize their loved ones.
DeVazia Turner, 29, was there with his cousin and friends, Sergio Harris, at a neighboring London club on Saturday night before he was shot. According to NBC NEWS, Harris, 38, was also killed.
As the family tried to calm Powell, Turner’s father, Frank Turner, shook his head. He described his son as a loving father of 4 with a “bubbly” nature that brightened any place he entered.
Turner’s children, ages 10 to 3, are being cared for by Frank Turner, who claims they are very young to really understand the tragedy.
Dandrae Martin, 26, was arrested earlier Monday on accusations of assault and unlawful weapon possession, according to Sacramento police.
Authorities issued search warrants at 3 homes as part of their search, resulting in the discovery of at least one firearm, according to police. The wounds on the surviving victims range from mild to serious.
Moments after the last call, a shooting happened in a busy downtown location. Multiple gunmen started firing in the aftermath of a major altercation, according to investigators.
Investigators discovered at least 3 buildings and 3 cars hit by gunfire during the early assessment of the area, according to police. Over 100 bullet casings were found by investigators.
Through the community evidence portal, investigators have received over 100 video or photo evidence. According to police, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office will analyze all evidence in order to identify suitable charges.
According to online data from the sheriff’s office, Martin was placed into custody in Sacramento County on 2 felony charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and a felony offense of being a guilty person possessing a loaded handgun.
It was unclear if Martin had hired a counsel as of Monday afternoon.
Martin is also wanted by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department on an outstanding warrant. According to prison records, he is due in court Tuesday afternoon.
According to a representative for the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office, Martin pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge linked to a domestic abuse case in October 2014. Martin was given a 30-day jail term and 36 months on probation. According to the spokesman, he broke 2 terms of probation, and a $5,000 bench warrant was issued in October 2015.
The four additional victims were named as Johntaya Alexander, 21, Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32, Melinda Davis, 57, and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, as well as a homeless inhabitant of a nearby park, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s office.
Harris’ sister, Kay Harris, 32, told Reporters that she was sleeping when a member of the family called to tell them they thought her brother was killed.
Officers near the location heard gunshots about 2 a.m., according to Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester. She stated they hurried to the scene, did CPR, and sealed the area.
According to Lester, at least 1 city security camera filmed some of the fighting.
President Joe Biden has urged Congress to take more steps to combat gun violence.
The incident, according to Mayor Darrell Steinberg, was “a senseless and unacceptable tragedy.”
