EUROPE (Washington Insider Magazine) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has solidified his international presence throughout the course of the Russian war, known for his outspoken personality and encouragement of sanctions against Russia. Just a few days ago, he released a new list of demands for elements that he believes will make the difference in the Ukrainian war efforts as the countries enter the sixth consecutive month of the war.
As the European Union is close to approving the seventh sanction package against Russia, President Zelenskyy has requested new forms of support. Currently, the package targets Russian gold exports, reporting requirements, and improving compliance with the freezing of personal assets during the duration of the Russian war. Although these sanctions have already been sanctioned in the past, a call to make them stronger is in question via the president himself.
According to President Zelenskyy, sanctions need to be strengthened and upheld to secure the safety of Ukraine and its citizens, and to move toward a future where both countries remain free and sovereign.
As Brussels lifts its restrictions for the transit of goods from Russia, and the Canadian-German compromising restrictions for Russia’s natural gas pipeline, the Ukrainian Government pushes for tighter restrictions. Moving forward without sanctions being strengthened, President Zelenskyy believes the winter months will empower Russia’s ability to manipulate the European government by using their compromise of restrictions against them.
Long-term sanctions are said to be the force needed to end the war and prevent further attacks in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists the pressure on Russia can’t be eased or compromised in the slightest. Zelenskyy proposes enforcing personal sanctions against Russian officials, Russian Advocates, and Russian state-owned enterprises; as well, as implementing a ban on Russia’s energy resources.
However, Western and Southern European countries are not 100% behind Zelenskyy. European opinion polls have shown a drop in support for Ukraine due to fear of Euro becoming more unstable; with many fearing the rise of living expenses if tighter restrictions are enforced.
European Government officials are also frustrated with the demands suggested by President Zelenskyy. The center point of disagreement is the effect sanctions will have on their economy. Countries who are already struggling are discouraged by the thought of the poverty-driven living conditions and risk their countrymen would be dealing with as a result of the action Government Officials would be forced to take.
Regardless, Ukraine demands that action be taken immediately to ensure security of Ukrainian lives, as well as to avoid the destruction of the country and the uproar of world consequences.
