WILDWOOD, N.J.(Washington Insider Magazine)- At least two persons riding in golf carts died as a result of collisions caused by a pop-up automobile rally that occurred during the weekend in southern New Jersey, according to officials.

Wildwood Mayor Pete Byron informed NJ Advance Media on Sunday that a number of automobile accidents occurred as a result of the “unsanctioned” car meet-up event. The two casualties, according to Byron, were on a golf cart but weren’t thought to be participating in the activity. The identities of those who died in the crash or its specifics were unknown to the mayor.

When cleanup work began on Sunday morning, WCAU-TV observed damage to stores and overturned traffic meters. Cape May prosecutors also confirmed that one individual was in prison in relation to a tragic collision.

Prior to the Fall Classic Auto Show in Wildwood, officials had issued warnings about what they dubbed an unauthorized car rally. Participants claim the event provides auto aficionados an opportunity to get together and check out automobiles, although officials in other cities, such Ocean City, Maryland, have previously reported issues related to the event.

According to ABC NEWS, videos posted on social media showed customized cars revving their engines and speeding off to cheers from onlookers gathering in the streets. Social media posts, according to WCAU-TV, showed people dangling out of cars while drivers circled the block, as well as burnouts, drifting, and collisions.

Three wrecked cars were discovered at the scene of one collision when a car crashed into a structure, according to NJ Advance Media.

The Wildwood Board of Commissioners announced on social media that state police as well as other police agencies from as far away as Atlantic City were responding after the mayor requested further backup from the governor.

Additionally, hundreds gathered at a Middle Township car park on Friday night, according to a statement from Mayor Tim Donahue.

Earlier, North Wildwood and Wildwood police promised to have more officers on duty due to allegations of several “pop-up meets” this past weekend. “We hope everyone has a good time at the Fall Classic Car Show in Wildwood and the Irish Fall Festival here but we will not tolerate the nonsense,” John Stevenson, the police chief in North Wildwood, said.
